TOMAS JIMENEZ NAMED ASSOCIATE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS AT VIRGINIA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – At Miami, Jimenez supervised a staff of 10 employees. He implemented a proactive mentorship retention program and among his responsibilities was the oversight of initial and continuing eligibility certification. He received the 2003 Exemplary Mentorship of Student-Athletes Award from the University of Miami’s Center for Research on Sport in Society. During his tenure, there was an increase of 22 percent in Miami’s student-athlete graduation rate.

“I am excited to join a prestigious institution like the University of Virginia with its impressive tradition of academic and athletic success,” Jimenez said. “I look forward to joining a wonderful athletics department team. I made two trips to Charlottesville and was impressed with the athletics department and its leadership.”

Prior to assuming his position at Miami, Jimenez was an assistant director of athletics for academics at Northern Arizona University from 1996-99. In that position, he directed the administrative and operational activities for academic support and student services for student-athletes. He and his staff were responsible for a 21 percent increase in the graduation rate of student-athletes at Northern Arizona.

Jimenez has also served as an academic advisor for student-athletes at the University of Central Florida (1994-96) and as an academic advisory intern and career specialist for student-athletes at Washington State University (1992-94).

He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and business administration from the University of New Mexico in 1991, and a master’s degree in sports administration from St. Thomas University in 1993.

Jimenez, who married the former Lisa Reynolds on the beaches of St. Thomas on July 5, is scheduled to assume his responsibilities at Virginia on August 25.
