Virginia head track and field coach Randy Bungard announced that Carrie Lane has joined his coaching staff. Lane, the United States Track Coaches Association 2004 Mondo Women’s National Assistant Throws Coach of the Year for NCAA Division I track & field, comes to Charlottesville after spending five years at Coastal Carolina University.

Lane, who finished her fifth season as the assistant for distance and throws, helped the Chanticleers to the Big South Triple Crown by winning the women’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field championships, a first for Coastal track and field. Lane also coached senior Amber Campbell to five NCAA All-America certificates, including a third-place finish in the 20-pound weight throw at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and a third place finish at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. Campbell set the American collegiate record in the 20# weight thro and tied the American collegiate record in the hammer. Lane also coached freshman Thomas Jordan who advanced to the NCAA Outdoor championships in the javelin throw, the only freshman in the country to qualify for the national championships in the javelin.

During her stint at Coastal Carolina, seven of Lane’s athletes set Big South conference records in the men’s and women’s throws. She has coached her throwers to five All-American honors, five NCAA Regional qualifying honors, and five Big South Field Athlete of the Year honors.

Lane came to Coastal Carolina after serving one year as a graduate assistant coach in track and cross country at Eastern Illinois University. She earned her Master’s degree in Sport Management from Eastern Illinois in 1999.

Prior to going to Eastern Illinois, Lane was a member of the track and cross country teams at Marquette University. She helped the Golden Eagles to a national ranking as a sophomore in 1995. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs from Marquette in 1997.

After graduation, she served as an assistant cross country coach at Milwaukee Vincent High School, head junior varsity girl’s basketball coach at Shorewood High School in Milwaukee and was the acting academic coordinator at Marquette. Lane also served as the director of Shorewood High’s cross country and basketball camps.

“To say that I am excited to have Carrie join our staff is an understatement,” said Bungard. “She brings a great deal with her to the University of Virginia and will help our program move forward. She brings great recruiting experience and contacts, she is administratively strong, and she can coach as well as anybody in the country. I look forward to working with Carrie.”
