SCHINIAS, Greece – Wyatt Allen, a 2001 graduate of the University of Virginia, is a member of the United States’ men’s eight crew that won that event on Sunday (August 22) at the 2004 Olympic Games. The U.S. hadn’t won gold in the event since 1964.
Allen is from Portland, Maine, and rowed with the Virginia men’s club team from 1998-2001.
The United States’ crew took the early lead in the 2000-meter race and won with a time of 5:42.48. The Netherlands was second (5:43.75) and Australia finished third (5:45.38).
The United States’ women’s eight crew finished second in that event on Sunday. Romania finished first with a time of 6:17.70 followed by the United States (6:19.56) and the Netherlands (6:19.85).
Former UVa rower Marlies Smulders is a member of the crew representing the Netherlands. Smulders, from Almere, Netherlands, rowed just one year with the Cavaliers and earned first-team All-America honors in 2001.
