No. 8 Virginia Men’s Soccer Ties South Carolina In Exhibition, 0-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 8 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team played the South Carolina Gamecocks to a 0-0 tie in an exhibition match on Thursday night at USC’s Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. There was not an overtime period played in the contest. The match also marked the second consecutive year Virginia and South Carolina played to a scoreless overtime exhibition contest.

Each side spent much of the first half feeling the other out with neither team being able to create many scoring chances. USC’s Brad Guzan was not forced to make any saves in the first frame for South Carolina, while the Gamecocks did manage one shot on goal against the Cavaliers’ Ryan Burke in the opening period.

The action picked up in the second half with both teams attacking more in the period. In the half, South Carolina’s Mike Sambursky had a pair of shots on goal, including one breakaway chance that was handled nicely by Burke. For the match, the Gamecocks out shot the Cavaliers by a 17-9 overall margin and by a 6-3 count in shots on goal.

UVa’s Burke finished the match with a game-high six saves, while USC’s Guzan ended the night with three saves in earning the clean slate.

Virginia will return to action on September 3rd and 5th when UVa host the Virginia Soccer Classic to kick off the Cavaliers’ 2004 regular season. Virginia will face Marshall on Friday, September 3rd at 7:30 PM before meeting Long Island on Sunday, September 5th at 2:30 PM. Other matches in the tournament are Long Island vs. Maryland on Friday at 5:00 PM and Marshall vs. Maryland on Sunday at noon. All four games will be played at UVa’s Klöckner Stadium.

South Carolina will open the regular season on Wednesday, September 1st, when the Gamecocks hosts William & Mary at 7:00 PM.
