CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team kicked off the 2004 season with a 4-0 win over East Carolina Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. Four different players scored for the Cavaliers, who outshot the Pirates 21-0 in the contest.

Virginia (1-0) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Fourth-year defender Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) blasted a rebound from 15 yards out just 1:30 into the game to start the scoring. In the 12th minute, the Cavaliers struck again as third-year midfielder Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) found the upper corner of the net from 25 yards out. Virginia added one more first half goal with just 11 seconds remaining before halftime as Noelle Keselica’s (Gaithersburg, Md.) through ball found Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) who broke in alone and chipped the ball over the Pirate keeper into the net. The Cavaliers’ added one more goal in the second half as Huffman’s cross along the end line was one-timed into the goal by Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.)

Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.), making her first collegiate start, did not need to make a save to record her first shutout. Lauren Church made four saves for East Carolina.

“We were excited to get the season started and we played with a lot of energy tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “I was pleased with how we got a lot of players into the attack tonight. We had four different scorers and all but one starter had a shot. We also did a good job on creating quality chances. Twenty minutes into the game, we only had three shots, but two of them were goals.”

Virginia will return to action on Sunday as they host Miami in the ACC opener. The Hurricanes fell to 2-0 Friday night in their season opener at George Mason.
