Today’s Game: The Virginia Cavaliers kick off the 2004 ACC season Sunday afternoon as they host Miami. The game marks the earliest conference opener in Cavalier history, while it is also the first ACC game in any sport for conference newcomer Miami.
The Cavaliers opened the season strong Friday night, shutting out East Carolina 4-0. Four different players scored as Virginia outshot the Pirates 21-0 in the contest.
Miami opened the season with a 2-0 loss at George Mason on Friday night. The Hurricanes outshot the Patriots 15-6, but couldn’t take advantage of it on the scoreboard.
All-Time Series: Today marks the first all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and the Hurricanes. Miami is the second of three first time opponents on the Cavaliers’ 2004 schedule. Friday night Virginia downed East Carolina 4-0 in the first game of that series and will play South Carolina for the first time later in the season.
Cavaliers in ACC Openers: Today’s game is the Cavaliers’ ACC opener, and marks the earliest point on the calendar the Cavaliers have played a conference game. Virginia is 9-7-1 all-time in ACC openers and won last season’s ACC opener 7-0 at NC State. For only the second time in the past ten seasons, the Cavaliers open the ACC season at home.
In the Polls: Virginia opens the 2004 season ranked No. 7 by Soccer America, the fourth consecutive season in which the Cavaliers have been in the publication’s preseason top ten. The Cavaliers are No. 10, No. 13, and No. 9 in the NSCAA, Soccer Buzz, and Soccer Times preseason polls respectively.
