CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team posted its second consecutive 4-0 victory to start the season, downing Miami Sunday in the ACC opener at Klöckner Stadium. The game was the earliest conference opener in Cavalier history and marked the first ACC game in any sport for the Hurricanes.
Virginia (2-0, 1-0 ACC) controlled the play in the first half, outshooting the Hurricanes (0-2, 0-1 ACC) in the first 45 minutes. In the 30th minute, Virginia got on the scoreboard as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) made a run to the near post and one-timed a Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio) cross into the net. The Cavaliers struck again just two minutes later as first-year Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) scored her first collegiate goal off a cross from Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas). Virginia took that 2-0 edge into halftime.
Early in the second half, the Virginia lead extended to 3-0 when Foley’s corner kick deflected off a Hurricane defender into the net. Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) closed out the scoring in the 70th minute with a one-time finish off a Foley cross.
Overall, Virginia outshot Miami 20-3 in the game. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made one save while posting her second shutout of the season. Lauren McAdam made four saves in net for Miami.
“As competitive as our conference is, you are happy with any ACC win,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “Even though we have posted to 4-0 results to start, we realize we still have a lot to improve on both sides of the ball. We are pleased that these first two games have given our young players a chance to get some experience.”
Virginia will return to action on Wednesday as they host Liberty. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
