CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia has named Bowen Sargent as head men’s golf coach, Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage announced on Tuesday.
The assistant coach at the University of Tennessee for two seasons, Sargent was named the Jan Strickland National Assistant Coach of the Year in May. Last season, he helped the Volunteers to three team victories and a No. 12 final national ranking.
Sargent replaces Mike Moraghan who accepted a position with the Athletics Department’s video services division. Sargent becomes the eighth men’s golf coach for the Cavaliers in the last 30 years. Joining Sargent on the UVa staff is assistant coach Shane Howell, who joined the Cavaliers in the spring.
“Bowen Sargent is one of college golf’s most well respected coaches,” Littlepage said. “He’s been a major part of the University of Tennessee’s success with his involvement in all parts of the Vols’ program. Bowen understands the ACC and has a familiarity with the University of Virginia having played at NC State. He will be a good colleague in our department and a great leader for our men’s golf program.”
Prior to coaching on the collegiate level, Sargent was a professional golfer for nine years. He is credited with eight professional victories.
A 1992 graduate of NC State where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications, Sargent was a two-time NCAA All-America honoree and was twice named first-team All-ACC. A member of the 1990 ACC championship team, Sargent played with the Wolfpack in four NCAA championship finals. He captained the squad in 1991.
“I am excited about this opportunity,” Sargent said. “There is a lot of tradition at UVa, and the Athletics Department is committed to excellence. I look forward to guiding the men?s golf team into the future.”
The University of Virginia men?s golf team opens the 2004-05 season at East Tennessee State’s Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sept.11-12.
