CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team opens its 2004 season by hosting in-state rival William & Mary on Wednesday, September 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym. Admission is free of charge. The match, along with all UVa home volleyball matches, can also be followed on-line on Virginia’s web site via Live Stats.
The match against William & Mary will also serve as Meet The Team Night. Fans will receive free posters (while supplies last). Immediately following the match, the team will sign autographs and will also be available for photographs.
UVa, under the direction of 10th-year head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton, finished the 2003 season with an impressive 25-9 overall record and was also 8-8 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Cavaliers return four starters and eight letterwinners from last season.
Virginia was picked to finish eighth in the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing fifth in the league last season. Fourth-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) was one of 14 players named to the 2004 Preseason All-ACC Volleyball Team.
