CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team posted its third consecutive shutout to start the 2004 season, downing Liberty 5-0 Wednesday night. Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) scored twice as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) each had two assists to lead the Cavaliers.

Gusick got the Cavaliers on the board early, as in the sixth minute she received a pass inside the six from Foley and chipped the ball into the net over the outstretched Flame keeper. In the 29th minute, Huffman’s corner kick was headed in by Jamie Fabrizio (Carmel, Ind.) for a 2-0 UVa advantage. Gusick struck again in the 60th minute as she one-timed a cross from Foley. Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio) pounced on a loose ball in the box and blasted it into the net in the 83rd minute. Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio) closed out the scoring her one-timer of a Huffman pass in the 84th minute.

Overall, Virginia outshot Liberty 33-3 and had 13 corners to zero for Liberty. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) had a career-high three saves in recording her third consecutive shutout. The Flames had 15 saves, 12 by keeper Natalie Mayer and three balls saved off the line by Liberty defenders.

“I thought we did some good things tonight and created a lot of chances,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We had 33 shots and 20 of them were on goal. The season is young and even though we are happy with the wins, we realize we still have a lot to improve on.”

The Cavaliers take to the road for the first time this season on Sunday as they visit No. 21 West Virginia (3-0). Game time at the new Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is 2:00 p.m.
