CHARLOTTESVILLE – Two members of the Cavalier women’s soccer team were named to the Elite Team of the Week by Soccer Buzz Magazine for their play during the opening week of the season. Second-year midfielder Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and fourth-year defender Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) were both named to the squad, as Virginia was the only school with two players on the 11-player list.
Foley and Hatch were instrumental in leading the Cavaliers to 4-0 wins over East Carolina and Miami (Fla.) to open the season. Foley had a goal and assist in each contest, and was tied for the ACC scoring lead following the opening weekend. Hatch anchored a Virginia defense that posted two shutouts, allowing no shots against East Carolina and three to Miami. She also scored the Cavaliers’ first goal of the season, 1:30 into the opener.
For Hatch, it is the third time in her career that Soccer Buzz has recognized her with the honor. For Foley, the recognition is the first of her career.
Following a 5-0 win over Liberty on Wednesday, the No. 6 ranked Cavaliers are now 3-0 on the season. They take to the road for the first time this season on Sunday as they visit No.21 West Virginia.
