CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a season-opening shutout victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd by posting a 3-0 victory in the second contest (Game 2) of the 2004 Virginia Soccer Classic at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers’ duo of Adam Cristman and Will Hall teamed together to provide all three goals for Virginia while UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke kept the Thundering Herd off the scoreboard with three saves in the victory. The match was the season-opener for both squads.

Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first half when Hall scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Cavaliers at the 42:55 mark. Hall gained possession of a loose ball near the top of the box and fired a one-timer past the Thundering Herd’s goalkeeper Joe Nebel to give Virginia a 1-0 lead just before halftime.

The Cavaliers extended their lead to 3-0 in the second half thanks to a pair of goals by UVa’s Cristman just under eight minutes apart. Cristman netted the first of his two goals at the 49:21 mark when teammates Mike Littlefield and John Hartman set him up with a scoring opportunity. Hartman directed a ball into the box to Littlefield, who then sent a pass to the feet of Cristman that he gathered and one-timed for a goal. Leading 2-0, Virginia added an insurance goal at 57:00 when Cristman found the back of the goal for a second time after he ripped a one-timer from the right flank into the net for the final tally of the match.

Marshall’s Nebel posted a game-high six saves in the loss, while UVa’s Burke posted three saves to preserve the shutout between the pipes.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 1-0-0 overall on the season. The loss drops Marshall’s record to 0-1-0 on the season. UVa improves to 14-1-0 all-time against the Thundering Herd in men’s soccer with the win.

In the first match of the tournament (Game 1) earlier in the afternoon, Maryland defeated Long Island by the score of 5-0.
