MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The No. 6 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team downed No. 21 West Virginia 1-0 Sunday afternoon to spoil the dedication game of the Mountaineers’ new Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kristen Weiss (Brecksville, Ohio) tallied the game’s only goal in the seventh minute, as the Cavalier defense posted their fourth shutout in as many games this season.
The Cavaliers (4-0) goal came as Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) found Kristen Weiss making a run towards goal and Weiss blasted a shot from 18 yards out inside the post for a 1-0 Virginia lead. Weiss nearly made the score 2-0 late in the first half as her 20 yard free kick found the post. The Cavaliers took that 1-0 advantage into intermission.
Both teams exchanged chances in the second half, but neither team could score. The victory was the Cavaliers’ third consecutive 1-0 win in the series.
Virginia outshot the Mountaineers (3-1) 12-8 in the contest. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made three saves for the Cavaliers while posting her fourth consecutive shutout. Lana Bannerman made four saves for West Virginia.
“To get a result on the road against a team like West Virginia is always a big win,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We didn’t play as well as we are capable of playing and give them credit for pressuring us. We just need to continue to improve as the season goes along.”
The Cavaliers return home next weekend to host the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic at Klöckner Stadium. Play begins with Maryland and South Carolina at 4:30 p.m. with the Cavaliers taking on No. 9 UCLA at 7:00 p.m.
