CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team defeated the Long Island Blackbirds by the score of 2-0 in Game 4 of the 2004 Virginia Soccer Classic at Klockner Stadium. In the final contest of the event, UVa’s Adam Cristman scored the game-winning goal just under four minutes into the match and goalkeeper Ryan Burke made a pair of saves to lead the Cavaliers to their second consecutive shutout victory of the tournament. Virginia also defeated Marshall by the score of 3-0 on Friday.
The Cavaliers finished second to the Maryland Terrapins in the tournament. The Terrapins also finished 2-0 in the event. Maryland and Virginia did not face one another, but the Terrapins edged the Cavaliers in goal differential by a plus 11-to-5 margin. Long Island and Marshall each finished 0-2 to place third and fourth in the event, respectively. The Blackbirds and Thunder Herd also did not play each other, but LIU claimed third place also due to goal differential due to a minus 7-to-9 margin. UVa’s trio of Hunter Freeman, Cristman and Burke were named to the 11-member 2004 Virginia Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team.
Virginia wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against Long Island and took an early 1-0 lead just 3:49 into the match when Cristman netted his third goal of the tournament, this one being the game-winner. Kirk Dinnall got the scoring opportunity started when he played a ball out of the right corner. Freeman fielded the ball and lined a pass to Cristman on the right side. Cristman then rifled a shot past LIU goalkeeper Ryszard Gorski to give UVa a 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers would take their one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 late in the second period when Zane Hill scored his first goal of the season and the second of his career at the 82:57 mark. Hill gathered a ball just past midfield and drove upfield before his hooking one-timer found the back of the goal to give UVa a two-goal cushion. That would be all the scoring the Cavaliers would need to put the seal on their second consecutive shutout victory of the year.
LIU’s Gorski made a game-high five saves in the loss, while UVa’s Burke made two saves in the win.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 2-0-0 overall. The loss drops Long Island to 0-2-0 on the season. UVa is now 2-1-0 all-time against LIU in men’s soccer.
The Cavaliers will return to action on September 10th & 12th when Virginia travels to Saint Louis, Mo. to compete in the 2004 Saint Louis Nike Classic. UVa will face Cincinnati on Friday, September 10th at 5:00 PM (CT) before facing host Saint Louis on Sunday, September 12th at 2:30 PM (CT). Both matches will be played at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
