Virginia Volleyball To Host VCU Wednesday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team opens a five-match homestand on Wednesday (September 8) when it hosts in-state rival Virginia Commonwealth at 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Gym. Admission is free of charge. The Cavaliers currently stand at 3-1 on the season, while VCU is 1-2.

The match against Virginia Commonwealth will also serve as Back to School Night. Fans will be able to compete in the Back to School Challenge presented by Office Depot.

UVa, under the direction of 10th-year head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton, finished second in the University of Louisville Courtyard by Marriot Tournament in Lexington, Ky., September 3-4. UVa fell to 20th-ranked Louisville 3-1 to open the tournament, but bounced back to beat Jacksonville State 3-1 and Loyola (Md.) 3-0. First-years Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) and Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) were both named to the All-Tournament team. On Monday (September 6), Kirkwood was also named the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, UVa’s first ACC Player of the Week since the 2000 season.
