SAINT LOUIS, MO. – The No. 11 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats by the score of 1-0 in the first game of the Saint Louis Nike Classic at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. UVa senior midfielder John Hartman provided the decisive score on a penalty kick, and sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Burke posted his third consecutive shutout to lead the Cavaliers to a one-goal victory.
Virginia dominated a scoreless first half of play but had a variety of scoring opportunities thwarted by Bearcats keeper Mike Vessells. The Cavaliers out-shot the Bearcats 7-3 and had a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.
Shortly after the start of the second half, UVa broke on top in the 48th minute on Hartman’s penalty kick at 47:52. Cincinnati defender Edward Parkes lost his footing in the Bearcats penalty area and grabbed the ball when UVa forward Adam Cristman tired to step around him. Although Vessells read the penalty kick shot properly, Hartman still beat the UC keeper inside the left post to give his team a 1-0 lead. Hartman’s goal became the game-winner.
Virginia out-shot Cincinnati 11-6 for the game and finished with a 4-3 edge on corners. UVa’s Burke made three saves, while UC’s Vessells also finished with three saves in goal.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 3-0-0 overall. The loss drops Cincinnati’s record to 0-2-0 on the season.
UVa will face fourth-ranked Saint Louis at 3:00 PM (CT) on Sunday, while the Bearcats meet No. 24 SMU at noon.
