JONESBOROUGH, TENN. – The Virginia men’s golf team made its season debut with a stellar performance on the first day of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The Cavaliers shot rounds of 290 (+2) and 293 (+5) for a total 583 (+7) and a seventh place standing.
Oklahoma is leading the 15-team field with a score of 572 (-4). Clemson, Texas Christian and Tennessee are tied for second at 574 (-2).’Oklahoma’s Anthony Kim is the individual leader after a pair of 68?s put him at 8-under par. Clemson’s Brian Duncan is in second at 137 (-7). Wake Forest’s Webb Simpson is in third at 138 (-6).
Senior Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) led the Cavaliers with scores of 71 and 72, giving him a total 143 (-1) and a tie for 10th place. Junior Carter Henderson (Nashville, Tenn.) is tied for 32nd at 147 (+3). Junior Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) shot a two-round score of 149 (+5) to tie for 47th. Sophomores Dan Gabel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Mark Perry (Atlanta, Ga.) are tied for 58th at 152 (+8).
The final round begins Sunday at 8 a.m. at The Ridges Golf & Country Club.
