The Virginia field hockey team (5-1) outshot the Quinnipiac Bobcats 14-3 and took ten corners to Quinnipiac’s six en route to a 4-1 decision at Bentley College today. Virginia’s Mia Link and Lindsey Selfridge both notched a goal and an assist to lead the Cavaliers in scoring while the defense did not allow the Bobcats a shot in the first 35 minutes of the game.
The Bobcats were awarded the first two short corners of the match, but it was the Cavaliers who capitalized off the corner first, as a Katie Jo Gerfen shot was stopped on the goal line by the feet of the Quinnipiac post player. Katie Phillips converted the stroke, putting Virginia up 1-0 at the 20:54 mark of the game. The Cavaliers held that lead, not allowing the Bobcats a shot on goal.
In the second half, the Cavaliers attacked quickly as Sarah Miller intercepted a 16-yard hit and sent the ball into the circle to Link, who in turn passed the ball to Erin Hayes. Hayes sent the ball to the boards across the cage, putting Virginia up 2-0 at 45:13. A Bobcat foul on the center pass gave the Cavaliers the ball, and Virginia responded by taking the ball up the middle where Gerfen took a free hit just outside the circle. Gerfen’s pass went to Selfridge, who in turn sent the ball to the stroke mark where Link hit the ball to the boards for a 3-0 lead just 36 seconds after Hayes’ goal.
Virginia worked the ball up the left side of the pitch eight minutes later and on a free hit outside the circle in the upper left corner, Miller sent the ball into McCallum, who drew a Quinnipiac foul and gave the Cavaliers a short corner. On the play, a Gerfen shot was controlled by Allison Flynn, who set the ball up for Selfridge, who lifted it to the nets for Virginia’s fourth goal of the game at 53:06. A Quinnipiac rush in the final minute of the game resulted in a goal by Chelsea Osbrey, breaking up the shutout.
Virginia returns to the Commonwealth to take on the Richmond Spiders on Sept. 15 in Richmond.
