Men's Golf Takes Ninth at Bank of Tennessee

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The Virginia men’s golf team captured ninth place in its season debut at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The Cavaliers, under the guidance of first-year head coach Bowen Sargent, shot a 297 in the final round for a 880 total.
Tennessee fired an eight-under 280 in the final round to bolt from third place to the team title with a 10-under 854. Texas Christian followed in the field of 15 with a seven-under 857. Clemson was third with a three-under 861.
Tennessee’s Philip Pettitt, who stood fifth after two rounds, took home medalist honors after firing a five-under 67 in the final round. Oklahoma’s Anthony Kim finished second with a 210 (-6), while Clemson’s Brian Duncan and Wake Forest’s Webb Simpson tied for third with a 211 (-5) each.
Senior Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) led the Cavaliers with a 219 (+3) to tie for 25th place. Junior Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) finished tied for 35th with a 222 after shooting a 73 in the final round. Sophomore Dan Gabel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tied for 42nd with a 223 (+7), while junior Carter Henderson (Nashville, Tenn.) finished with a 225 (+9). Sophomore Mark Perry (Atlanta, Ga.) rounded out the UVa scoring with a 229.
Virginia returns to action on Sept. 27-28 at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate in Nashville, Tenn.
