CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two Virginia football players earned ACC Player of the Week honors for their respective positions, the conference announced on Monday.
Senior Elton Brown (Hampton, Va.) was named the Offensive Lineman of the Week, while senior Marquis Weeks (Berwyn, Pa.) was named the Specialist of the Week.
Brown turned in his highest grade in two years in Saturday’s 56-24 win over North Carolina, according to the UVa coaching staff. The guard recorded eight knockdown blocks. For the second straight week, Brown helped the Cavalier line to no quarterback sacks or pressures. Virginia rushed for 299 yards, its highest in six years, while the 549 yards of offense are the most in five years.
The ACC honor is the third in Brown’s UVa career.
In the second quarter against the Tar Heels, Weeks returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, tying the all-time NCAA record. The return also marked the second time in Weeks’ career that he returned a kick 100 yards for a touchdown against North Carolina. Weeks now shares the school record for most career kickoff returns for a touchdown with two. Overall, he returned three kickoffs for 132 yards (44.0 average). The team’s 238 kickoff return yards breaks the school record of 228 set in 1951 against Washington & Lee. Weeks also led the team with three tackles in kickoff coverage while playing 16 plays on four of the six special teams units.
The ACC honor is the first of Weeks’ career.
Virginia hosts Akron in the Homecoming game on Saturday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
