CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia hosts Akron on Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. in its annual Homecoming game for the second time in the last three years.
The Cavaliers are off to their best start since 1998 as they look for their first six-game winning streak in two years. They are ranked 12th in this week?s Associated Press poll, their highest ranking since a #12 listing in early November 1998.
Virginia has gotten off to fast starts in both games so far this season, using scoring outbursts to make the outcome apparent early on.
Many players have contributed to the early success. TB Wali Lundy is tied for the national lead with six touchdowns, while QB Marques Hagans has been flawless and is third in the country in passing. He leads the way in completion percentage (79.4) and hasn?t thrown an interception.
Offensively the Cavaliers lead the ACC in total offense, rushing offense and scoring as they attempt to score at least 40 points for the third game in a row.
The defense has shown toughness in a variety of ways. They forced two early turnovers against Temple to set up two short scoring drives on the way to a 44-14 win. Last week they put together a fabulous goalline stand late in the first quarter to set an early tone against a powerful North Carolina offense on the way to a 56-24 win over the longtime rival.
