WACO, Texas – University of Virginia junior guard Brian Barthelmes (Parkman, Ohio) has been selected to the 2004 American Football Coaches Association’s Goods Works Team, the AFCA announced on Wednesday.
“It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities,” AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff. “Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities.”
Nominations for the award were submitted to the AFCA by the college sports information/media relations departments. Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities. Candidates have to display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Athletic ability is not a criteria.
In April, Barthelmes had his first haircut in 18 months. The 21-year old football player, who stands 6-7 and 286-lbs., donated 10 inches of his hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides wigs made of donated hair to children who have suffered long-term hair loss because of an illness.
As a member of the Cavaliers, Barthelmes visited the University of Virginia Children’s Medical Center twice a month during the year. Not a required team activity, teammates participating varied from week-to-week. However, Barthelmes was a regular participant, bringing joy and companionship to the sick children.
Similar to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Little Siblings Program couples children with college students for mentoring and friendship. Barthelmes participated in the program for a semester until his little sibling moved away. As part of his outgoing personality, Barthelmes has continually mentored his younger teammates, particularly during workouts in the weight room.
When he’s home in Ohio, Barthelmes devotes his time and talents to several local organizations, including the Cleveland City Mission Outreach, Youth with a Mission Outreach, and Youth for Christ Leadership.
Virginia hosts Akron on Saturday, Sept. 18 in the annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
