Virginia’s Logan Carr made 14 saves, including 11 in the first half of play, but the Cavaliers still fell to the Richmond Spiders 2-1 on Wednesday, Sep 15, in Richmond. A goal by Mia Link, her ninth of the 2004 campaign, tied the game in the second half and the Virginia (5-2) defense held the nation’s leading scorer off the board, but the Spiders (5-0) managed a goal in the final five minutes of play and held on for the victory.

Richmond capitalized on its first short corner of the game as Allie Howard stuck back a rebound, putting the Spiders on top 1-0 6:45 into the game. The Cavalier defense withstood Richmond the rest of the way, with Carr making 11 saves in the first 35 minutes to keep the Cavaliers close. The teams entered the break with Richmond up 1-0.

The Cavaliers tied the game as they worked the ball up the left side of the pitch. Megan Ponessa lifted an aerial to the top of the circle, where Lindsey Selfridge collected the ball and pushed it up to Link. Link drove forward, pulled right, and sent the ball into the empty net after drawing the Spider netminder out of the cage at the 48:26 mark of the game. Richmond notched the go-ahead goal as Shannon Taylor attacked down the right side of the pitch and fired a ball to the other side of the cage at 64:58.

The Virginia defense kept Richmond’s Holly Cram, who is leading the nation with 4.5 points per game, without a point, the first time in 2004 that has happened.

The Cavaliers return to action with a game against top-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, Sept 19 in Chapel Hill.
