The Cavalier cross country teams open up the home portion of their schedule this weekend as they host the Lou Onesty Invitational on Saturday, Sep. 18. After a few saw limited action last week, most of the Cavalier men and women will be prepared for their first race of the season. The men’s 8K and the women’s 5K races will be held at Panorama Farms with the men’s race starting at 10:00 am and the women’s race following at 10:45 am. Other teams competing include William and Mary, Hampton, JMU, Ohio State, VMI, Liberty, and VCU.

The men are led by Will Christian, who led the Cavaliers in every cross country meet in 2003, earning All ACC and All Regional honors. The defending Lou Onesty champion, he finished seventh in the NCAA Southeast Regional and took third at the ACC Cross Country Championships. Second year Alex Tatu looks to build on a strong track season last year in which he posted one of the top times in the 1500m in school history, and followed that up with a win at the Colonial Invitational last week in his cross country opener. Joining Christian and Tatu are NCAA qualifiers James Atchinson, Ryan Neuhart, and Dave Vitto as well as transfer Jeff Eggleston.

The women are led by several veterans. Cheryl Carr returns back from a breakout season of cross country as she was one of the top Cavaliers in the NCAA Southeast Regional last year. Shannon Hawrylo, who led the Cavaliers last week in the William and Mary Open, also ran at the NCAA Southeast Regional in ’03. Laura Hodges and Kristen Milot were also in the top 10 in the opening meet of the season last week, setting the stage for their home opener at Panorama Farms.
