WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The second-ranked Wake Forest men’s soccer team jumped out to an early lead, but were unable to hold off Virginia as the Cavaliers notched a pair of second-half goals to get past the DemonDeacons, 2-1, in the ACC opener for both squads at Spry Stadium Fridaynight.
Wake Forest (3-1-1, 0-1-0 ACC) came out of the locker room and pouncedon visiting Virginia (4-1-0, 1-0-0 ACC) just minutes into the match. TheDemon Deacs served the ball deep into the Cavalier penalty area to thefoot of senior James Riley, but Riley was unable to gain possession. Inthe attempt to clear the ball, Virginia played in directly to fellowWake Forest senior Stephen Keel who blasted it into the far upper cornerat 4:41 to give the Deacs the 1-0 lead.
The Demon Deacons controlled the rest of the first 45-minutes and tookthe one goal advantage into the second stanza, but the Cavaliers cameout much more aggressive in the second-half. Virginia was rewarded withthe equalizer in the 61st minute. Nico Colaluca streaked down the centerof the Wake Forest defense and laid off the ball to Ian Holder justoutside the six-yard box. Holder then snuck the ball under a chargingDemon Deacon goaltender Brian Edwards to even the match, 1-1. The goalwas Holder’s first of the season.
Virginia struck again just 10 minutes later. After a bad Wake Forestgive away at the midfield stripe, John Hartman found Matt Ayotte allalone just outside the 18-yard box. Ayotte then calmly slipped the ballpast Edwards into the far right corner at 70:53 to give Virginia itsfirst lead of the match.
The Demon Deacons continuously assaulted the Cavalier penalty area overthe game’s final 15 minutes, but were unable to find the net. Bothjunior Michael Parkhurst and senior Scott Sealy each had blasts fromjust outside the penalty area skip just wide of the net.
As expected in this heated rivalry, the match was filled with whistles,fouls, yellow cards and flaring tempers. Virginia was whistled for 19fouls to Wake Forest’s 14. The Cavaliers were issued six yellow cards,including five in the second-half, while the Deacs were issued just one.
The Demon Deacons out-shot Virginia, 13-8, and registered seven cornerkicks to the Cavaliers one. Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke recorded fivesaves in the victory, while Edwards picked up a pair in defeat.
The Cavaliers have now beaten Wake Forest five consecutive times and theCavaliers snapped the Deacons 13-match regular season home winningstreak. Wake Forest also saw an end to its regular season unbeatenstreak of 29 games at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons last regularseason home loss came on September 8, 2001 against Dartmouth.
Wake Forest returns to action this Tuesday evening against 13th-rankedUNC Greensboro. Kickoff is scheduled for Spry Stadium at 7 p.m.
