Virginia’s Emily Harrison, running in her first collegiate cross country race at home, led the host Cavaliers to the Lou Onesty team title today (Sep 18) with a second place finish as Virginia claimed half of the top 16 spots. Harrison finished with an 18:11.50, just ahead of teammate Nadia Baadj who took third. Virginia’s three-through-six runners ran 8-9-11-12, separated by a span of 13 seconds as the Cavaliers used their team depth to defeat Virginia Tech 33-56. On the men’s side, Will Christian finished third as did the men’s team, who had 62 points, just 16 more than champion William & Mary and 12 more than runner-up Ohio State.

Harrison took the lead halfway through the race and was just nipped at the end by the eventual champion, Jessica Fanning of Virginia Tech. “The women did great,” said head coach Jason Dunn. “Our first years did very well, and we are young, but we showed a lot of promise.”

Christian and Andrew Dumm finished in the top-10 for the Cavaliers, who also had a solid pack as Jeff Eggleston, Alex Tatu, and Ryan Foster finished seven seconds apart as the Cavaliers 3-5 runners. “Will did what I asked of him, and Dumm ran very well,” added Dunn.

The Cavaliers return to action next weekend as they compete at the George Washington Invitational in Manassas on Saturday, Sept 25.
