WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 3 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team won its second tournament in as many weeks, capturing the Nike Tribe Invitational with a 1-0 win over William & Mary Sunday at Albert-Daly Field. With the victory, the Cavaliers improve to 8-0-0 on the season, the Cavaliers’ best start in over a decade.
The Cavaliers were kept off the scoreboard in the first half for the first time this season. However, Virginia increased the pressure on the Tribe in the second half until finally scoring 73 minutes into the match. Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) played a short corner to Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) who left the ball at the corner of the box for Foley who blasted it just inside the far post.
The lone goal was all the Cavaliers would need as the defense allowed just two shots in posting its sixth shutout of the season. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made one save for Virginia, while Kellie Fenton made four saves for the Tribe.
“This is as strong of a rivalry that we have and we knew it was going to be a battle,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Their plan was to sit back and counterattack. I was glad to see us utilize patience and do the work necessary to get a goal.”
The Cavaliers resume ACC play on Friday as they visit No. 9 Florida State. The game will be televised live on the Sunshine Network, available on cable systems throughout Florida and nationwide on DirecTV and Dish Network.
