The Virginia men’s tennis team opened the 2004 fall season by sending individuals to two tournaments last week. Third-year Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) and first-year Somdev Dev Varman (Tamil Nadu, India) competed in the USTA Futures Event in Claremont, Calif. while second-year Burak Ahmed (Boca Raton, Fla.) and first-years Eric Riley (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Andrew Downing (Virginia Beach, Va.) competed at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh, N.C.

At the Futures event in California, both Stewart and Dev Varman were selected for the main draw. Dev Varman defeated Jeremy Wurtzman 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Wurtzman, an All-American at Ohio State, was ranked No. 1 in the collegiate singles rankings last year and was the No. 3 seed at the 2004 NCAA singles championships. Dev Varman fell in the second round of the tournament to sixth seeded John-Paul Fruttero, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Fruttero, a former standout at Cal, is currently ranked No. 378 in the world. Stewart fell 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the event to the No. 4 seed, Zbynek Mlynarik of Austria, the world’s No. 341 ranked player. Former Cavalier All-American Huntley Montgomery reached the singles final of the tournament.

At the Wolfpack Invitational, Ahmed and Riley each reached the second round of Flight A, while Downing reached the second round of Flight B.

The Cavaliers will host the 2004 UVa Fall Invitational this Friday-Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center.
