CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 12 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team defeated the Manhattan Jaspers by the score of 4-1 in a non-conference game played in front of 807 spectators at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers turned a 1-1 tie game at the half into a three-goal victory by scoring three unanswered goals in the second period to pull away from the Jaspers. Virginia’s Hunter Freeman netted the game-winning goal, which was the first collegiate goal of his career, in the UVa victory.
After playing nearly 37 minutes of scoreless soccer, Virginia got on the scoreboard first when first-year forward Matt Ayotte scored his second goal in as many games to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. First-year midfielder Chris Tierney played a ball into the box that Ayotte chipped in from five yards outs at 36:58. Manhattan countered with a goal of its own at 41:56 on a free kick after a Virginia foul that resulted in a yellow card. The Jaspers’ Justin Schultz booted the free kick into the UVa box where teammate Brian Lundy made a leaping header on the ball, sending it into the Virginia goal. Lundy’s goal tied the game at 1-1 as both teams went into halftime tied at one apiece.
In the second period, the Cavaliers turned up their offensive attacked and netted three unanswered goals, beginning with Freeman’s eventual game-winning strike at 51:03. Freeman’s goal was actually a nicely played cross into the box where Manhattan goalkeeper Collin Leaver made a read on the ball as it hooked towards the far post. As Leaver attempted to pull in Freeman’s cross, the ball fell out of his grasp and ended up in the Jaspers’ goal for a Cavaliers score. Freeman’s goal lifted UVa to a 2-1 lead.
Virginia added a pair of insurance goals at 68:15 and 83:42 to take a commanding 4-1 lead. The Cavaliers’ Matt Oliver scored UVa’s third goal of the match when Freeman sent a corner kick into the box that he chipped off the side of his foot to direct the ball into the goal. Virginia’s final score came with just over six minutes remaining to play in the match when Kirk Dinnall gathered possession of a loose ball in the Manhattan box and one-timed it from the left side for the final goal of the contest.
UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke made two saves in the win, while the Jaspers’ Leaver made six stops and the Manhattan defense made one team save on a blocked shot in front of the goal, to pile up seven saves in the loss.
