CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s golf team is ranked No. 14 nationally in the first rankings of the 2004-05 season, Golfweek.com announced.
The Cavaliers, under the guidance of head coach Jan Mann, are in their second-ever season of competition. Following their inaugural season, the Cavaliers finished ranked 61st last spring.
Individually, sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) is ranked third nationally, while sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) stands 11th.
In its first tournament of the season, UVa finished fourth at the Cougar Classic on Sept. 14 with Smith claiming the school’s first medalist honors with a four-under 212. Wigger finished third with a two-under 214.
The Cavaliers return to action on Oct. 1-3 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn.
