The Virginia Cavaliers stood toe-to-toe with the #7 Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (4-3), twice holding a lead and actually led in the game for a longer period of time, but it was the Lady Monarchs who led last, 4-3 at the end of regulation on Sunday, Sept. 26. Katie Phillips led Virginia with a goal and an assist, while Katherine Blair had nine saves as Virginia led 1-0 and 2-1 while outshooting the Lady Monarchs in the first half.

The Cavaliers jumped on top first as Biffy Cornelison intercepted a ball in the ODU half of the field and was fouled as she brought the ball inside the 25. On the restart, Katie Jo Gerfen fed the ball into the circle where an ODU defender tipped the ball up and Phillips knocked the ball into the cage just 9:20 into the game. Old Dominion answered ten minutes later as Caroline Nichols connected on a rebound of a short corner to tie the game at 22:09. The Cavaliers kept the Lady Monarchs at bay the remainder of the half, with Blair making two key saves while Virginia outshot ODU 6-5 overall in the first 35 minutes.

Virginia took its second lead of the game just minutes into the second half as an Old Dominion misreception in the backfield was picked up by Abby Taylor, who hit a shot 2:14 into the stanza to give the Cavaliers their second lead of the game. Again the Lady Monarchs responded as Dana Sensening fed Darcy Pinchbeck just two minutes later for the equalizer. ODU took their first lead of the game 20 minutes later as Nichols fed Sensening at 57:39 on a broken corner.

The Cavaliers answered right back as they broke up a corner and on the restart Amy Marotta’s free hit went up the field to Taylor, who took the ball up before laying it off for Mia Link. Link took the ball into the circle, where she drew a short corner. On the play, Phillips shot the ball and Allison Flynn tipped it into the cage at 62:02, tying the game for the third time. On the restart, the Lady Monarchs notched the game-winner just over a minute later as Pinchbeck scored her second of the game.

Virginia returns home for a game against the Tribe of William & Mary on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Game time is 7:00.
