WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The No. 3 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 2-1 in overtime at Wake Forest Friday night. Elizabeth Remy scored the golden goal for the Demon Deacons with just over a minute to play in the first overtime.
The Cavaliers (9-1-0, 2-1-0) and Demon Deacons (7-3-1, 1-2-0) played 75 minutes of scoreless soccer before trading goals 31 seconds apart. Virginia took the lead when Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) knocked in a Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) corner kick. Seconds later, Wake Forest countered and after a long shot hit the crossbar, the rebound came right to Sarah Kozey who tied the game with a point blank shot.
In the overtime period, the Cavaliers controlled the play until Wake Forest countered late in the period. Kozey sent a through ball to Remy, who took a shot that hit off the inside of the far post and into the net.
The Cavaliers outshot Wake Forest 12-9 in the game. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made four saves for Virginia, while Heather Currie made six for Wake Forest.
“I am pleased with our kids effort tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “When you have had the type of start we have had, you are going to get everyone’s best effort. We were the aggressors tonight but were unfortunate on a couple of counters.”
The Cavaliers return to action Tuesday, October 5 as they visit Maryland. Game time at Ludwig Field is 7:00 p.m..
