Captains Announced For Virginia Men’s Basketball Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Seniors Elton Brown, Jason Clark and Devin Smith are tri-captains of the 2004-05 University of Virginia men’s basketball team.

Brown, a 6-9 forward-center from Newport News, Va., was an honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection last season. He led Virginia in scoring (14.8 ppg.) and rebounding (6.3 rpg.), and made 50.3 percent of his shots from the field (166-330) for the 2003-04 season. He has lettered three times for the Cavaliers.

Clark, a 6-8 forward from Virginia Beach, Va., averaged 4.5 points and tied for second on the team with an average of 5.1 rebounds a game last season. He led the team in blocked shots with 31 in 2003-04 and enters the 2004-05 season ranked eighth on Virginia’s career blocked shots list with 95. He has made 61.1 percent (129-211) of his shots from the field during his UVa career and has lettered three times for the Cavaliers.

Smith, a 6-5 forward from New Castle, Del., was an honorable mention All-ACC selection last season and received the team’s Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year Award. He led the Cavaliers in free throw percentage (.800, 60-75) and steals (37), was second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg.) and tied for second with an average of 5.1 rebounds a game in 2003-04 despite being hampered by a back injury. Smith, who was a UVa tri-captain last season, has lettered twice for the Cavaliers since transferring to Virginia from Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kan.

The Virginia men’s basketball team takes a preseason trip to Montreal, Canada, for three exhibition games later this week. The Cavaliers play Royal Military College on Friday (Oct. 8) and Concordia University on Saturday (Oct 9) in the Concordia Nike Tournament. On Sunday (Oct. 10), UVa plays McGill University.
