COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 3 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw with No. 23 Maryland Tuesday night at Ludwig Field. With the tie, the Cavaliers move to 9-1-1 on the season, 2-1-1 in the ACC.
Throughout the night the Cavaliers had the better of the chances against the defensive minded Terrapins (4-3-2, 1-3-1 ACC). Virginia outshot Maryland 28-6 in the contest and had a 12-1 corner kick advantage. However, the Cavaliers couldn’t take advantage of their chances and were shutout for the first time this season.
Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) only needed to make one save for the Cavaliers to post her eighth shutout of the season. Nikki Resnick made nine saves for Maryland.
“A game like this one is frustrating,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We played well tonight and did a good job of moving the ball. We had our opportunities but obviously our finishing wasn’t good enough.”
The Cavaliers return home for the first time in nearly a month on Saturday as they host No. 16 Duke. The game begins at 5:00 p.m. and is the first game of a soccer doubleheader as the men’s team will play Davidson afterwards.
