Cavaliers Fare Well in All-American Qualifying

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Virginia men’s tennis team had a strong day of play during Monday’s qualifying round of the ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga. All five Cavaliers competing in singles won their matches, as did the Virginia doubles team competing.

In singles, Rylan Rizza (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), Virginia’s only seeded player in the qualifying round, defeated Reed Hagmann of Colgate 6-4, 6-4. First-year Somdev Devvarman (Tamil Nadu, India) downed Matt Baccarani of Ball State 6-4, 6-4. Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) posted a straight set win over Christopher Biro of Arizona State 6-3, 6-3. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over 17th seeded Clint Letcher of Arizona State. First-year Treat Huey (Alexandia, Va.) also rallied for a three-set win, topping Chris Klingermann of Ohio State 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

In doubles, the team of Huey and Devvarman defeated John Stone and Ryan Recht of Indiana 8-4.

Qualifying rounds continue on Tuesday as the Cavalier players will try to join the Cavaliers who automatically qualified for the main draw. Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) is in the singles main draw, as is the doubles team of Rizza and Meythaler.
