The Virginia field hockey team held the Longwood Lancers to two shots, one in each half, and one short corner that came in the final play of the game, while scoring eight goals en route to an 8-0 shutout tonight (Oct 6) at University Hall Turf Field. Mia Link scored her second hat trick of the season while Jen McCallum notched her first point of 2004 as the Cavaliers outshot the Lancers 26-2 and had the edge in short corners 9-1.
The Cavaliers drew the first short corner of the game as Abby Taylor intercepted a 16-yard hit and took it into the circle, but Longwood’s Julie Patterson made a pair of saves on the corner attempt. A counterattack by the Lancers resulted in a scramble in front of the Virginia cage, but Logan Carr made the only Virginia save of the game to keep Longwood off the board.
At the other end of the pitch, Allie Flynn intercepted a pass and laid it off to Link in the circle. Link passed the ball across the mouth of the cage to Phillips, who hit the ball to the goal for Virginia’s first goal of the game, coming at 10:13. The Lancers called a timeout, but Virginia quickly gained possession of the ball and Phillips brought the ball into the circle where she drew a penalty corner. On the corner, Biffy Cornelison injected the ball and Sarah Miller stopped it for Katie Jo Gerfen, who fired the ball to the boards for a 2-0 lead at 11:27, just 74 seconds after Phillips’ goal.
Virginia scored a pair of goals in a span of 86 seconds nine minutes later as Link intercepted a pass, took it into the circle, and fired a shot to the roof of the cage to give Virginia a 3-0 lead at 20:55. Abby Taylor intercepted a 16-yard hit a minute later and sent the ball to Link, whose shot was saved by Patterson. Phillips was there for the rebound and stuck it in the boards for her second goal of the game, which came at 22:21. The Hoos also scored on their next shot of the game as Miller intercepted a pass below the 25 and laid it off to Taylor, who took the ball to the endline before sending it to the strokemark where Lindsey Selfridge buried it in the boards for a goal at 24:35. Taylor scored herself five minutes later as she collected a loose ball in the circle and hit a reverse stick chip to the goal for the Cavaliers’ sixth goal of the game at 30:10. Virginia led at the break 6-0.
The Hoos jumped on top early in the second half as Phillips forced a short corner just a minute into the period. On the corner, Erin Hayes injected the ball to Miller, who stopped it for Link. Link lifted the ball to the upper corner of the net for her second goal of the game just 78 seconds into the second period, giving UVa a 7-0 lead. Link notched her hat trick seven minutes later as the Cavaliers drew a penalty corner and Link tipped in a pass from McCallum at 43:59 to give Virginia an 8-0 lead. This was the second time in 2004 that the Cavaliers have reached the 8-goal mark.
With time winding down, Longwood brought the ball upfield where they were able to draw their only short corner of the game with 15 seconds left on the clock. The Cavalier defense was able to clear the ball out of the circle, preserving the shutout, their second of 2004.
Link’s hat trick is her second of 2004 and she becomes only the tenth person in school history to have two or more three-goal games in one season. She also now has 30 points on 13 goals and 4 assists, and ranks seventh all-time in scoring as a second-year in school history. Her 13 goals are also the most for a Cavalier in a single season since Jessie Coleman had 20 in 2001, and she is tied with All-American Michelle Vizzuso at sixth all-time in school history with 13 goals as a second year.
Virginia continues their homestand with a game against Princeton on Sunday, Oct 10. Game time against the Tigers is 12:00 noon.
