CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 17 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team used a decisive second half of play to record a 3-0 shutout victory over the visiting Liberty Flames in a non-conference match at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. Virginia first-year midfielder Jeremy Barlow posted the game-winning score (his first collegiate goal) and became the eighth different Cavalier to score a game-winning goal for UVa in as many matches this season. The shutout victory was Virginia’s fourth of the year as the Cavaliers improved to 6-0-0 at home.
After both teams played a scoreless first half of soccer, UVa came out in the second half as the aggressor before netting the first goal of the match just over seven minutes into the second period. Virginia’s Adam Cristman tapped a cross into the box for a streaking Barlow, who touched the ball into to far left-hand corner of the goal at 52:07 for the eventual game-winning score.
UVa extended its lead to 2-0 at 66:53 when Ian Holder scored his third goal of the season. The Cavaliers’ Hunter Freeman found Holder with a pass into an open seam where he gathered the feed before one-timing a shot from 18-yards out that found the back of the net. Freeman’s assist marked the ninth point he has scored in UVa’s last five games (seven assists, one goal).
Virginia added an insurance goal late in the match at 87:27 when midfielder Chris Tierney’s corner kick connected with teammate Jeff Tuman in the box. Tuman headed Tierney’s cross into the goal for his first goal of the season. The score gave UVa a commanding three-goal lead with just over two minutes remaining to play in the contest.
Virginia goalkeeper Ryan Burke made one save to preserve UVa’s fourth shutout win this season. The Flames’ Kevin Mahan made a game-high seven saves (Liberty also had one team save) in the loss.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 8-2-0 overall. The loss drops Liberty’s record to 6-5-1 on the season. UVa is now 13-0-0 all-time against Liberty in men’s soccer.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Saturday, October 9th when Virginia hosts the Davidson Wildcats in a non-conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM and will be played at UVa’s Klöckner Stadium.
