CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia men’s golf team shot a five-under 283 in the opening round of the Franklin Street Partners Invitational on Friday to lead the field of nine teams.
Georgia Southern is second with a three-under 285, while host North Carolina is third with an even 288.
East Carolina’s Adam Howell fired a six-under 66 to hold s light lead over the field. East Tennessee State’s Rhys Davies and UNC Charlotte’s Ray Sheedy are tied for second with a five-under 67, while Georgia Southern’s David Palm is fourth with a four-under 68.
Junior Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) stands fifth with a three-under 69 as three Cavaliers shot under par in the first round. Sophomore Mark Perry (Atlanta, Ga.) follows by a stroke with a career-best two-under 70 to tie for sixth. Senior Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) fired a one-under 71 to tie for 11th. Junior Carter Henderson (Nashville, Tenn.) shot a 73 (+1) to tie for 20th, while sophomore Dan Gabel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Cavaliers, tying for 26th with a 75 (+3).
Action at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational continues on Oct. 9-10 with 18 holes each day.
