CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Cavalier third-year Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships with a pair of victories on Thursday. It is the second consecutive year that Stewart, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, has reached the third round of the prestigious event.
In the first round, Stewart, ranked No. 5 nationally by the ITA, downed No. 44 ranked Vlad Obradovic of Florida 7-6, 6-3. In the second round, Stewart rallied to defeat K.C. Corkery of Stanford, ranked No. 20 nationally, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Two other Cavaliers were in the main draw for singles that features 46 of the top 50 players in the nation in the 64-player field. Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), ranked No. 75 nationally, was defeated by Jesse Witten of Kentucky, the nation’s No. 3 ranked player 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. Cavalier first-year Somdev Devvarman (Tamil Nadu, India) lost to Jonathan Chu of Harvard, ranked No. 25 nationally, in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles, the team of Rizza and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.), a No. 5 seed in the draw, were upset in the first round by Patrick Briaud and Conor Niland of California, 8-3.
The tournament continues play on Friday.
