Virginia Stands 13th at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Virginia women’s golf team stands 13th after the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate at the Cherokee Country Club on Friday.
Arkansas leads the field of 17 teams with a 289 (+5). Ohio State is second with a 293 (+9), while Kent State is third with a 296 (+12). The Cavaliers shot a 311 (+27) in the opening round.
Tennessee’s Holly Cantwell and Kent State’s Gabby Wedding lead all golfers with a two-under 69 each. Arkansas’ Gena Johnson and Michigan State’s Mandi McConnell are tied for third with a one-under 70.
Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) paces the Cavaliers with a 73 (+2) to tie for 13th. Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) stands 35th with a 76 (+5), while freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) follows with a 80. Sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) shot a 82, while sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) shot a 87.
Play continues at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate on Oct. 9-10 with 18 holes slated for each day.
