MONTREAL – The University of Virginia men’s basketball team scored the first 20 points of the game and rolled to a 111-52 victory over the Royal Military College in the Concordia Nike Tournament Friday night (Oct. 8). It was the first of the Cavaliers’ three exhibition games in Canada.
Virginia made 12 of 20 three-point field goal attempts in the first half as the Cavaliers sprinted to a 60-20 halftime lead. UVa shot 63 percent from the field for the game, including 51.9 percent (14-27) from three-point range.
Five Virginia players scored in double figures led by sophomore guard J. R. Reynolds with 23 points. Reynolds made six three-point field goals in the first half.
Other double figure scorers for the Cavaliers were senior forward Devin Smith with 19 points, senior forward-center Elton Brown with 18 points, sophomore forward-guard Gary Forbes with 16 points and freshman center Tunji Soroye with 10 points. Smith made five three-point field goals and Brown was 7-9 from the field.
Virginia’s starting lineup in the game was comprised of sophomore guard T.J. Bannister, Reynolds, Forbes, Smith and Brown.
The Cavaliers play Concordia University in the tournament on Saturday (Oct. 9). Concordia defeated the University of Lethbridge 94-52 on Friday.
