CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 17 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team posted a 4-1 victory over the Davidson Wildcats in a non-conference match in front of a season-high 2,032 spectators at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. Virginia’s Jeremy Barlow scored a pair of goals and Ryan Burke made four saves to help guide UVa to a three-goal victory. The Cavaliers scored the first four goals of the match and improved to 7-0-0 at home while increasing their season-high winning streak to four consecutive games with the win over the Wildcats.

After playing just over 30 minutes of scoreless soccer, Virginia took a 1-0 lead at 30:41 on Barlow’s first goal of the match. UVa’s Kirk Dinnall played a ball into the box from the right end line that got knocked down in front of several Davidson defenders in the box. Barlow, who was involved in a minor collision and fell to the ground, jumped to his feet in front of the lose ball and chipped it into the Wildcats’ goal to put the Cavaliers ahead by one. Virginia took its one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second period, UVa came out attacking and scored three consecutive goals in the period to take a commanding 4-0 lead. The Cavaliers’ Adam Cristman gave Virginia a 2-0 lead at 60:08 when Hunter Freeman tapped a free kick to Cristman and he fired a shot from 25 yards out that froze Davidson’s goalkeeper as the shot rolled past him and into the net. Cristman’s goal, his team-high sixth of the season, was the eventual game-winner.

UVa extended its lead to 3-0 just 24 seconds later at 60:32 when Barlow netted his second goal of the match (his third goal of the season). The Cavaliers’ Freeman threw in a ball to Cristman, who then sent a cross into the box. Barlow fielded Cristman’s pass and chipped in another shot for a goal. Exactly five minutes later at 68:32, Virginia pushed its lead to 4-0 when Chris Tierney passed a ball to teammate Sean Hinkle in the far right corner of the box. Hinkle fired a shot from 16 yards away for the Orange and Blue’s final score of the match. Hinkle’s goal was his first of the season.

Davidson cut Virginia’s lead to 4-1 at 69:32 on a goal by Tom Lavan, but it was not enough as the Wildcats fell 4-1.

UVa’s Burke made four saves in goal in the win, while the Wildcats’ Bart Creasman and Ben Ashton made two stops apiece in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 9-2-0 on the season. The loss drops Davidson’s record to 3-6-0 on the year. UVa is now 7-2-0 all-time against Davidson in men’s soccer.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on Tuesday, October 12th when Virginia hosts Saint Francis (NY) in a non-conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM and will be played at UVa’s Klöckner Stadium.
