The Virginia defense held strong throughout the game against the ten-time defending Ivy League champion Princeton Tigers, while a two-goal explosion in 112 seconds at the other end of the field paced the Cavaliers to a 2-1 win today (Oct 10). After a first half in which Virginia drew more short corners that the Tigers (6-5), the score was still knotted at 0-0. The Cavaliers exploded with two goals 1:52 apart in the opening minutes of the second half to take a 2-0 lead, and then held strong at the other end of the field to thwart a spirited Princeton rally.
Virginia forced the first short corner of the game early on, but the Cavaliers were unable to find the back of the net. At the other end of the field, keeper Logan Carr made three saves to keep the Tigers off the board, sending the teams to the break tied at 0-0.
The Hoos started with the ball in the second half, and Virginia attacked early. Allison Flynn intercepted a pass coming out of the backfield and attacked, taking the ball down to the endline before feeding it across the mouth of the goal where Abigail Taylor knocked it to the boards for the opening goal of the game. A minute later a Sarah Miller interception led to a pass to Mia Link, who took the ball into the circle where she was fouled. On the ensuing corner, Biffy Cornelison injected the ball to Miller, who stopped it for Link. Link lifted the ball to the bottom of the crossbar and into the cage, giving the Hoos a 2-0 lead 3:17 into the second half.
Princeton responded with a goal seven minutes later as Kelly Darling tipped in a Lizzie Black free hit, pulling the Tigers to within one at 47:20. From that point, the Virginia defense withstood a seven-shot, four-corner barrage from Princeton, but each time Princeton threatened, the Cavaliers answered. With seven minutes to play, a Black shot on an option left off a short corner was saved off the line by Julianne Bojanic to keep the one-goal advantage.
Link’s goal gives her 14 on the season, and she is now tied for fifth in goals in a season by a second year with Meredith Elwell.
Virginia continues its homestand with a game against Radford on October 13. Game time against the Highlanders is 7:00 pm. Princeton returns home to host Brown in an Ivy League contest on Oct 16.
