CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a 3-1 victory over the visiting Saint Francis Terriers in a non-conference match at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. After falling behind 1-0 less than seven minutes into the contest, the Cavaliers scored three unanswered goals, including the game-winner by UVa’s David Rosenbaum, to win their season-high fifth consecutive match of the season. Virginia also extended its home unbeaten streak to eight game (8-0-0) with the victory.

Saint Francis took an early 1-0 lead at 6:33 when Peter Ramirez scored a goal on the Terriers’ first shot of the match. Ramirez’s shot came after a ball was played into the box from the right wing intended for Saint Francis’ George Lesmes. Lesmes battled with a pair of UVa defenders before the ball landed at the feet of Ramirez after the Cavaliers failed to clear the ball from their own backfield. Ramirez chipped the shot into UVa’s goal to give his team an early one-goal lead.

Saint Francis held its 1-0 lead until the 23:32 mark. That’s when Virginia tied the match at 1-1 on Jeff Tuman’s second goal of the season. The Atlantic Coast Conference’s assist leader, Hunter Freeman, notched the first of his game-high two assists in the match when he directed a free-kick into the box where Tuman headed it into goal to knot the score at one apiece. The game remained tied 1-1 at the break as both teams took their locker rooms at the half.

Virginia took its first lead of the match and made it a 2-1 contest at 63:57 when UVa’s Rosenbaum scored his first collegiate goal on his first collegiate shot shortly after entering the game. Appearing in just his third match this season, Rosenbaum quickly made his presence felt when he took a strong feed from teammate John Hartman from deep in the middle of the field and touched it past Saint Francis’ goalkeeper for the eventual game-winning score. Rosenbaum became the ninth different player this year to score a game-winning goal for UVa.

Virginia added an insurance goal at 77:02 when Chris Tierney netted his second goal of the season to give the Cavaliers a commanding 3-1 lead. Tierney’s goal was set up on a cross into the box by Freeman and a header by Mike Littlefield that took the Terriers’ goalkeeper Adrian Benitez out of the play to allow a clear shot on goal by Tierney for the score. Freeman’s second assist gave him 13 on the season and extended his streak of points scored in a match to seven games. Freeman has now posted 13 points (11 assists and one goal) in his last seven consecutive matches played. Freeman’s 13 assists this season already ranks him seventh all-time at UVa for most assists in a singe season.

The Cavaliers’ goalkeeper Ryan Burke made one save in the win, while Saint Francis’ Benitez made a game-high two stops between the pipes for the Terriers in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 10-2-0 overall. The loss drops Saint Francis’ record to 5-7-1 on the season. This was the first meeting between Virginia and Saint Francis in men’s soccer.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, October 17th when UVa travels to Clemson, S.C. to face the Clemson Tigers in an ACC match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM at Clemson’s Historic Riggs Field.
