CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 4 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team kept its home record perfect on the season with a 5-0 win over James Madison Tuesday night at Klockner Stadium. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 11-1-1 on the season.
The Cavaliers were led by Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) and Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.), who each had two goals and an assist. Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) made history on the night with her two assists, giving her a new Virginia season record of 12 assists on the year.
The Cavaliers got on the board in the 17th minute when Gusick found Hammond making a run to the far post and Hammond one-timed the pass into the net. The situation got worse for James Madison (5-5-3) in the 35th minute when defender Shannon Seipp picked up her second yellow card in as many minutes, forcing the Dukes to play a player down the remainder of the contest.
The Cavaliers took advantage of the short-sided Dukes in the second half, scoring four times. Gusick tallied in the 50th minute off of a cross by Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) and again in the 61st minute off a cross from Hammond. Hammond scored her second of the night in the 64th minute as she tapped-in a Foley cross from point-blank range. Ariel Thompson (Salem, Va.) closed out the scoring with 35 seconds remaining.
Overall, the Cavaliers outshot James Madison 22-2 on the night, the fifth game this season the Cavaliers have scored more goals than shots allowed. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) did not need to make a save to post her ninth shutout of the season. Jessica Hussey and Amanda Hutchings made four and three saves respectively for the Dukes.
“I was pleased with our pace and focus from the start tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Obviously the game changed when they went down a player. We did what we needed to do tonight and scored some nice goals in the process.”
The Cavaliers make their final road trip of the regular season on Sunday as they travel to Chapel Hill for a meeting with defending National Champion North Carolina.
