Cavalier Women’s Soccer Falls 2-1 at North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The No. 4 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team suffered their second defeat of the season, falling 2-1 to No. 2 North Carolina at Fetzer Field. The win continues the Tar Heels’ 42-game unbeaten streak as they improve to 14-0-1, 7-0-0 in the ACC, while the Cavaliers fall to 11-2-1, 3-2-1 in the ACC.

The Tar Heels struck first in the 35th minute for the only goal of the first half. Kacey White delivered a cross that found Sara Randolph making a run at the far post for a tap-in goal.

North Carolina added another goal early in the second half as Anne Morrell thread a through ball to Lori Chalupny who scored from 12 yards out in the 51st minute. Ten minutes later the Cavaliers cut that lead in half as Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) served a corner kick to the far post where Jamie Fabrizio (Carmel, Ind.) headed it into the net. Both teams’ defenses held tight over the final 30 minutes, allowing no goals and just one shot over the final half hour.

Overall North Carolina outshot the Cavaliers 8-6, a season low for shots for both teams. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made three saves for the Cavaliers, while Aly Winget made one for North Carolina.

“If you look at the stats, it was a pretty even game,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Give them credit, their pressure was the key to this game. They took advantage of their chances.”

The Cavaliers return home for the their final three games of the regular season. On Wednesday the Cavaliers host Virginia Tech as the first part of a doubleheader at Klockner Stadium. Game time is 5:00 p.m., with the men’s team taking on Longwood at 7:30 p.m.
