CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia remains on the road for the second week in a row with a game Saturday in a non-televised match-up against Duke. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
The Cavaliers fell out of the top-10 rankings after a two-week stay following last week?s 36-3 loss at Florida State. Virginia dropped to 14th in the Associated Press media poll and 15th in the coaches poll.
Despite falling from the ranks of the undefeated, UVa is still off to its best start in six years with a 5-1 record. The Cavaliers are also tied for fourth in the ACC with Virginia Tech at 2-1 in the league.
Led by QB Marques Hagans, the ACC?s leading passer, Virginia leads the ACC in total offense (457.8 ypg), rushing offense (232.5 ypg), passing offense (225.3 ypg) and scoring (35.8 ppg).
Duke won its first game two games ago with a 28-10 win over The Citadel, but fell to Georgia Tech 24-7 in Atlanta last Saturday to fall to 1-5 this season. The Blue Devils are next to last in the ACC in total defense, rushing defense, pass defense and points allowed, factors the Cavaliers no doubt hope will hold true on Saturday.
Virginia has dominated the series recently, winning 17 of the last 21 meetings. Since joining the ACC for the 1954 season, the Cavaliers have won more games on Duke?s home field than any other league school except Wake Forest. UVa has won nine times in Wallace Wade Stadium (and 16 times at Wake Forest?s stadium).
This game is odd in one respect?a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. That was a common time for games to start for many years, but has become less so with the influence of television in the last 20 years. This is only the 10th game since 1994 to begin at 1 o?clock and the first on the road since the Cavaliers played at Georgia Tech on Oct. 15, 1994.
