CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #8 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory in overtime over the Longwood Lancers in a non-conference game at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. After both teams played through two scoreless periods in regulation, the Cavaliers’ Matt Oliver scored the game-winning goal 5:20 into the first overtime period to lift Virginia to its seventh consecutive victory. UVa is now 9-0-0 at home this season.
Oliver’s game-winning goal, his fourth goal this season, came at 95:20 and was set up by teammate Hunter Freeman. Freeman, the NCAA’s leader in assists, posted his 14th assists of the season when he sent a cross into the box to Oliver from the right flank. Oliver gathered the loose ball cross from Freeman and chipped it into goal for the score.
UVa dominated play statistically, except on the scoreboard until Oliver’s goal. Virgin ia outshot Longwood 28-1 and had a 21-0 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
The Lancers’ Matt VanOekel made a game-high eight saves in goal, while his teammates added two goal-saving stops (team saves) to give Longwood ten saves for the match. UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke did not have to make a save in the match which was Virginia’s six shutout this season.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 12-2-0 overall. The loss drops Longwood’s record to 1-13-0 on the season. UVa is now 3-0-0 all-time in men’s soccer against the Lancers.
