Cavalier Women’s Soccer Downs Virginia Tech 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Midfielder Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) had her first multi-goal game of her career as the No. 4 Virginia women’s soccer team downed Virginia Tech 3-0 Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium. The win keeps the Cavaliers’ home record perfect (8-0) this season.

The Cavaliers (12-2-1, 4-2-1 ACC) outshot the Hokies (8-7-0, 3-5-0 ACC) 11-0 in t he first half, but the game was scoreless at the break. The Cavaliers got on the scoreboard in the 60th minute as Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) threaded a ball to Huffman making a run into the box. Huffman dribbled to ten yards out, then placed the ball just inside the far post. Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute as Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) blasted a shot from 25 yards out that found the upper corner of the net. Huffman scored her second of the game in the 87th minute when she one-timed Ariel Thompson’s (Salem, Va.) pass to the top of the box past the diving Hokie keeper.

Overall, the Cavaliers outshot Virginia Tech 24-1 on the night, and had a 12-0 corner kick advantage. Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) made just one save in posting her tenth shutout of the season, one shy of the Virginia single season record. Mallory Soldner made ten saves for Virginia Tech.

“I didn’t think we played as well as we are capable of playing tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “I will take an ACC win any day, but you always look at the standard you set as a team. I thought we did a better job in the second half in terms of our quality of play.”

The Cavaliers continue their homestand on Sunday as they host No. 24 Clemson at 1:00 p.m. The Cavalier fourth-years will be honored prior to the game.
