CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #8 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team defeated the #13 ranked Duke Blue Devils in a wild and crazy Atlantic Coast Conference match by the score of 3-2 in overtime in front of 2,532 spectators at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. Trailing 2-0 with just 3:30 remaining in the match, Virginia rallied to score two goals in the final minutes of regulation before the Cavaliers’ Mike Littlefield notched the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Cavaliers to their eighth consecutive victory. Littlefield’s game-winning goal makes him the 11th different UVa player to score a game-winning goal in Virginia’s 13 victories this season. The win lifts UVa to a perfect mark of 10-0-0 at home this season.

Duke wasted little time scoring and took an early 1-0 lead at 5:49 when Michael Videira fed Spencer Wadsworth with a pass that Wadsworth shot off the far post and into the UVa goal to give the Blue Devils a one-goal lead. Duke made it a 2-0 contest at 28:37 when Blake Camp scored a goal on a penalty kick. The Blue Devils would take their 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Although Duke had what looked like a comfortable lead at 2-0, the Blue Devils made it very difficult on themselves to preserve the advantage after two Duke players were ejected from the game due to red cards. The Blue Devils’ Chris Loftus picked up his second card of the match resulting in his ejection shortly before halftime (42:20) before Zachary Pope was ejected from the game at 79:50 after he was issued a red card. The two costly penalties forced Duke to play the final 10:10 of the match down two men, and Virginia made the Blue Devils pay for it.

With just 3:30 seconds remaining in regulation, UVa scored its first goal of the match at 86:30 when John Hartman was the recipient of a pair of crosses in the box from teammate Hunter Freeman and Paul Johnson. Hartman headed in a cross for a goal to cut Duke’s lead in half at 2-1. The Blue Devils tried to hold onto their shrinking lead in the final minutes, but took down a Virginia player in the box which resulted in a UVa penalty kick at 88:56. With just 1:04 remaining in regulation, UVa’s Freeman converted the penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2, sending the match into overtime.

Six minutes and 46 seconds into the first overtime period, the Cavaliers’ Littlefield scored the game-winning goal at 96:46 when he headed in a cross from Freeman and Hall to seal the victory for the Cavaliers.

The Blue Devils’ Justin Trowbridge made a game-high seven saves in the loss, while UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke made three saves in the win.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 13-2-0 overall, 4-1-0 in the ACC. The loss drops Duke’s record to 13-3-0 overall, 3-3-0 in the conference.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on Wednesday, October 27th when Virginia hosts the Old Dominion Monarchs in a non-conference match. The contest will be played at 7:30 PM at UVa’s Klöckner Stadium.
